This is one piece of history that the US should remember. The CIA supported the fascist junta which was one of the most repressive regimes in Europe. The students were mostly communists who disagreed with the tactics and political support from the US. When it was over, one of the most terrifying and successful terrorist groups in Europe came into being, the N-17, named in honor of the day of the rebellion. The group operated until just a few years ago. They launched many attacks against US interests and targets, and killed a number of CIA and government types. This was just one of many examples where a neo-fascist communist-hating US created its own worst enemy by supporting repressive dictatorships ONLY because they claimed to be anti-communist and then lived to regret it. the same thing is happening today with the Islamic world and South/Central America.

We're our own worst enemy, and apparently we're too stupid to learn from our "mistakes."
