I think the reason for the reaction against the pictures of the captured Saddam are to be found in American reactions to Iraqi television showing pictures of downed American pilots during the first Gulf War. Back then the US were quite willing to claim that that was a violation of the Geneva Conventions, and that they would put Saddam to trial for it. However, the Geneva Conventions seem to be applied a bit less thoroughly by the Americans these days.

About the crimes of Islam I agree with Mandrach. Remember also that Saddam was a perverted socialist leader, rather than a religious one.
