Why? Ill tell you why!
Back in August, my two anti virus programmes started reporting the presence of a virus called either Jave Byte Verify or just Byte verify. The reports came from the shield, not from the scans and said that the virus was in the Symantech quarantine portal. The reported location changed with every report. Shortly thereafter I also got infected with something called Adware.CDT which the scanners failed to clear.
So, ever since then Ive been trying to get rid of the buggers. Nothing seemed to work. The advice I got on removing Adware.CDT recommended going into the registry and deleting about three pages of stuff. Now, I dont know very much about computers, but I do know that if I go into the registry, I will be like a kangaroo in a minefield!
Anyways, a pal of mine suggested a couple of on line scanners and so I tried a few. All failed to clear the infections, but one of them gave path and identification information about two infections called something else altogether. I investigated and identified the files. The Adware. CDT wasnt a problem, it was easy to ascertain that the infected file was not part of any programme and removing it removed the virus. The other one was trickier, it seemed to be an application file and removing it didnt work because it reappeared after re booting.
A techy pal came to my rescue yesterday and we spent hours running scans in safemode. Norton finally did its job and reported 34 infections with the same virus cleaned, but AVG still reported the bloody thing. The only thing left to do was to remove a file called secure.bat which I thought was the source, but my pal was nervous of removing. Well, I removed it anyway and called it a day.
The computer didnt seem to have suffered any last night and this morning, I ran both virus scanners and for the first time since August, no Trojans were found!
So, I am doing the happy dance and if anybody else wants to join me, roll back the carpet and boogie!!!!!!
I feel so ..... so clean!!
